There is something comforting about a good Bollywood romantic comedy. You know there will probably be a confused boy, an independent girl, a best friend who gives questionable advice, a little heartbreak and, somewhere along the way, a lesson about growing up. Prem Keetanu walks into that familiar territory with confidence, bringing together college romance, friendship, career confusion, jealousy and the messy business of figuring out adulthood.
Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, the film stars Veer Pahariya, Aafiya Sayed, Aparshakti Khurana, Nikhil Vijay and Rakesh Bedi. The film released in theatres on October 2, 2026, and has a reported runtime of around 2 hours 18 minutes. It is a Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam hit Premalu, but rather than simply reproducing the original, the makers have shifted the setting and attempted to give the story a more Hindi, UP-NCR flavour.
And that is where the biggest question surrounding Prem Keetanu begins: Can a remake retain the emotional magic of an original while creating an identity of its own?
The answer is complicated.
Prem Keetanu has enough charm, humour and youthful energy to make parts of it enjoyable. Veer Pahariya looks comfortable in the carefree portions of the film, Aafiya Sayed makes a confident debut and Nikhil Vijay provides some of the film’s most natural comic moments. But the screenplay becomes less convincing as the story moves deeper into romance and emotional conflict. Several critics have also felt that the Hindi remake does not completely capture the warmth and effortless humour that made Premalu so popular.
So, is Prem Keetanu worth watching? Here’s our detailed review.

What Is Prem Keetanu About?
At its heart, Prem Keetanu is a story about a young man who is still trying to figure out what he wants from life when love unexpectedly enters the equation.
Vishal, played by Veer Pahariya, is not exactly the picture of ambition when we meet him. He is carefree, somewhat directionless and more interested in enjoying life than building a serious career. His closest friend Magan, played by Nikhil Vijay, becomes his partner in the chaos.
Things begin to change when Vishal meets Suhani, played by debutant Aafiya Sayed. Suhani is more confident, independent and career-oriented, creating an immediate contrast with Vishal. Their relationship begins with the kind of awkwardness and uncertainty that is familiar to anyone who has experienced college romance or an unexpected crush.
But Vishal isn’t the only person interested in Suhani.
Enter Ranjeet, played by Aparshakti Khurana. He is successful, polished and professionally established, and his proximity to Suhani creates a romantic triangle that pushes Vishal into confronting not only his feelings but also his own insecurities.
The story eventually becomes about more than simply “Will the boy get the girl?” It explores friendship, career anxiety, rejection, jealousy, self-worth and the uncomfortable transition from carefree college life into adulthood.
Prem Keetanu Story and Plot
The film begins with the college phase, where Vishal and his friends provide most of the youthful energy. The early portions are built around friendship, college madness, awkward romantic situations and the kind of everyday humour that doesn’t require elaborate jokes.
This is arguably where Prem Keetanu feels most comfortable.
Vishal’s friendship with Magan gives the film a strong comic foundation, while his attraction towards Suhani introduces the romantic track. What makes the relationship interesting initially is the contrast between the two characters. Vishal is still figuring himself out, whereas Suhani appears much more certain about her future.
Their paths cross again as they enter the professional world. Vishal is still struggling to establish himself, while Suhani gets a corporate job and begins navigating a completely different environment.
Her professional life brings her closer to Ranjeet, who represents almost everything Vishal currently lacks — confidence, financial stability, professional success and social polish.
Naturally, Vishal begins to feel threatened.
But the film isn’t particularly interested in turning Ranjeet into a conventional villain. Instead, the character becomes part of the larger question surrounding Vishal: Is his biggest competition really another man, or is it his own lack of direction?
That is one of the more interesting ideas in Prem Keetanu, even though the screenplay doesn’t always explore it as deeply as it could have.
Is Prem Keetanu a Remake of Premalu?
Yes. Prem Keetanu is the Hindi adaptation/remake of the 2024 Malayalam romantic comedy Premalu.
This is important because much of the critical conversation surrounding the film inevitably revolves around comparisons with the original.
Premalu, starring Naslen and Mamitha Baiju, became popular because of its easy humour, charming characters, natural chemistry and relaxed approach to romance. Prem Keetanu retains the broad structure but changes the cultural setting, character dynamics and tonal approach.
The Hindi film is therefore not simply a frame-for-frame recreation. The makers have attempted to make it feel more connected to Hindi-speaking audiences and the UP-NCR environment. Filmfare, for example, described the adaptation as giving the Malayalam hit its own Hindi-film personality rather than merely reproducing it.
However, this is also where the remake faces its biggest challenge.
When you change the qualities that made the original special, you risk losing the very thing audiences loved about it.
Veer Pahariya as Vishal: Does He Carry the Film?
Veer Pahariya is arguably the biggest test for Prem Keetanu because the film depends heavily on Vishal’s journey.
The good news is that Pahariya fits naturally into the carefree, slightly immature side of the character. His comic timing works better than expected, particularly in the lighter college portions. Hindustan Times also highlighted his comic timing, while other reviews have pointed to his boyish charm as one of the film’s strengths.
The more difficult part comes when Vishal’s character is expected to carry emotional weight.
The film wants us to understand his insecurity, heartbreak and gradual realisation that he needs to do something with his life. Some of these moments work, but the screenplay doesn’t always give Pahariya enough material to turn Vishal into a deeply layered character.
Still, this is a performance that suggests Pahariya can handle more comic and youthful roles. He has an approachable screen presence, and the film benefits from that.
Aafiya Sayed as Suhani: A Promising Debut
Aafiya Sayed makes her Bollywood debut as Suhani, and she has one of the more difficult roles in the film.
Suhani needs to be independent without becoming cold, romantic without becoming predictable and emotionally strong without turning into a conventional Bollywood heroine.
There are moments where Sayed manages this balance effectively. Her chemistry with Veer Pahariya is reasonably natural, particularly during the lighter sections of the film. Several positive reviews have specifically pointed towards her natural screen presence and the chemistry between the two leads.
The problem is less with Sayed’s performance and more with the writing.
The screenplay sometimes reduces Suhani’s perspective and makes her feel like the centre of a competition between two men rather than a fully developed character with her own emotional journey.
That is a missed opportunity because Suhani could have been one of the most interesting characters in the film.
Aparshakti Khurana as Ranjeet
Aparshakti Khurana brings his familiar comic energy to Ranjeet, the successful professional who becomes Vishal’s romantic rival.
Ranjeet could easily have become a one-dimensional “rich guy gets in the way” character. Instead, Khurana gives him enough personality to remain entertaining.
His interactions with Vishal provide some of the film’s funnier moments, although the character occasionally feels more exaggerated than the rest of the movie.
Aparshakti is clearly comfortable in this territory, and even reviewers who were critical of the film acknowledged that the supporting cast provides some of its entertainment value.
Nikhil Vijay Is One of the Film’s Best Things
If there is one supporting performance that consistently adds energy to Prem Keetanu, it is Nikhil Vijay.
As Magan, Vishal’s friend, he provides the kind of easy comic chemistry that romantic comedies desperately need. His character doesn’t feel like someone inserted simply to deliver jokes; the friendship gives Vishal’s journey a little more emotional grounding.
Hindustan Times specifically praised Vijay’s performance, while several other reviews have also highlighted the friendship track as one of the film’s more enjoyable aspects.
In some scenes, the Vishal-Magan friendship is actually more convincing than the central romance.
Rakesh Bedi Brings the Experience
Rakesh Bedi plays Suhani’s father and brings the effortless screen presence that comes with years of experience.
His role isn’t enormous, but he understands exactly how much energy the scenes require. Some reviews have singled him out as a supporting highlight, particularly for the comedy and warmth he brings to the family portions.
Bedi is one of those actors who can make even an ordinary scene feel more alive.
Prem Keetanu First Half vs Second Half
This is where the critical response becomes particularly interesting.
The first half is generally regarded as the stronger portion of the film. The college setting, friendship, banter and youthful energy give the movie a breezy quality.
The second half, however, becomes more dependent on the romantic conflict, career issues and emotional drama.
This is where the screenplay begins to lose focus.
Hindustan Times described the first half as breezy and funny but criticised the predictable romance, excessive songs and unfocused screenplay. Bollywood Hungama similarly called the film a decent entertainer while pointing to a weak second half.
That assessment feels fair.
The film doesn’t completely collapse in the second half, but it loses some of the effortless energy that made the opening portions enjoyable.
Comedy: Does Prem Keetanu Make You Laugh?
Yes — but inconsistently.
The humour works best when it emerges naturally from the characters, particularly Vishal and Magan’s friendship and the awkwardness surrounding young love.
The problem is that the film occasionally appears to work too hard to tell the audience that a particular moment is funny.
The difference is subtle but important.
The best romantic comedies don’t constantly announce their jokes. They allow characters to create the humour themselves.
Prem Keetanu gets that balance right in some scenes and misses it in others.
Music and Songs
Music plays an important role in Prem Keetanu, with songs being used to move between college life, romance, heartbreak and emotional transitions.
The soundtrack includes contributions from names such as Sachet-Parampara, Rahul Mishra and other composers, with tracks including “Tu Mera Raiyyo,” “Ishq Ka Ghulam,” “Undi Bundi” and “Kaho Toh.”
There is some disagreement about the soundtrack.
Some reviews appreciate the music, while others feel the film uses too many songs and that they interrupt the narrative rather than strengthening it. Hindustan Times and other critics specifically identified the number of songs as one reason the second half feels less focused.
Personally, I would have preferred fewer songs with stronger narrative integration.
Prem Keetanu vs Premalu: Which Is Better?
This is the question many viewers will ask before buying a ticket.
The original Premalu had a very specific charm. It was funny without constantly trying to be funny, romantic without becoming overly sentimental and populated by characters who felt imperfect but incredibly likeable.
Prem Keetanu follows the broad blueprint but changes some of the emotional texture.
The Hindi version is more interested in giving the story its own setting and tone. That is understandable, but some critics believe the changes have weakened the original’s natural warmth.
Cinema Express was particularly harsh, arguing that the adaptation retains the basic structure but loses the soul and character depth that made Premalu work. Telegraph India similarly felt that the Hindi version struggles because the original’s appeal was rooted in cultural nuance, easy humour and characterisation.
If you loved Premalu, therefore, don’t expect Prem Keetanu to recreate exactly the same experience.
If you have never watched Premalu, you may find the Hindi version easier to approach on its own terms.
What Works in Prem Keetanu?
There is enough here to make the film an enjoyable one-time theatrical watch for the right audience.
The biggest positives are:
- Veer Pahariya’s comfortable comic presence.
- Aafiya Sayed’s promising debut.
- Nikhil Vijay’s comic timing and friendship track.
- Aparshakti Khurana’s energetic supporting performance.
- The college-life portions and youthful atmosphere.
- The UP-NCR setting, which gives the film a recognisable Hindi-film identity.
- Some genuinely funny exchanges.
- A simple story that doesn’t demand too much from the audience.
These strengths are also reflected in the more positive reviews, with Times of India calling it a breezy Gen Z rom-com and ABP Live giving it 3.5/5 for its entertainment value.
What Doesn’t Work in Prem Keetanu?
The weaknesses become more obvious when the film tries to become emotionally serious.
The biggest problems are:
- A predictable romantic storyline.
- Uneven screenplay.
- Limited depth in some characters.
- A second half that lacks the energy of the opening.
- Songs that occasionally interrupt the narrative.
- Emotional moments that don’t always feel earned.
- Constant comparisons with Premalu because of the adaptation.
- A romantic triangle that sometimes feels more conventional than fresh.
This explains the wide range of critical reactions. Bollywood Hungama gave it 2/5, Hindustan Times 2.5/5 and India Today 1.5/5, while Times of India and News18 were more positive at 3/5.
Prem Keetanu Critics’ Reviews and Ratings
The critical response is clearly divided rather than universally positive or negative.
| Publication | Rating | Major Takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Times of India | ⭐⭐⭐/5 | Breezy Gen Z rom-com with humour and youthful charm |
| Hindustan Times | ⭐⭐½/5 | Good first half and performances, but predictable and unfocused |
| Bollywood Hungama | ⭐⭐/5 | Decent entertainer but weak second half |
| India Today | ⭐½/5 | Too preachy and confused, with weak writing |
| Koimoi | ⭐½/5 | Loses much of Premalu‘s charm |
| News18 | ⭐⭐⭐/5 | Strong performances make it enjoyable |
| India TV | ⭐⭐⭐/5 | Appealing chemistry and a sweet coming-of-age story |
| ABP Live | ⭐⭐⭐½/5 | Entertaining college romance with good comic timing |
| Filmfare | ⭐⭐⭐/5 | Gives Premalu a distinct Hindi-film personality |
The takeaway is quite clear: critics agree that the film is watchable, but they disagree sharply on how successful it is as a romantic comedy.
Prem Keetanu Ending Explained — Without Giving Away Everything
The film ultimately brings Vishal’s romantic and personal journey towards its expected emotional destination.
But the more important part of the ending isn’t simply who ends up with whom. It is Vishal’s realisation that love cannot be treated as a substitute for ambition, confidence or personal growth.
For much of the film, Vishal’s romantic pursuit becomes intertwined with his insecurity about his own life. Suhani represents not only someone he loves but also someone who seems to have figured out the direction he himself lacks.
That makes the ending work better when viewed as a coming-of-age conclusion rather than simply the resolution of a love triangle.
The film does, however, choose a relatively conventional romantic resolution rather than taking the more emotionally open-ended route some viewers may have expected from the original.
Spoiler-free verdict: the ending is satisfying enough for a mainstream rom-com, but it isn’t likely to surprise audiences familiar with this genre.
Is Prem Keetanu a Good Romantic Comedy?
Yes, but with qualifications.
If your idea of a good romantic comedy is a light film with young characters, friendship, jokes, romance and some emotional drama, Prem Keetanu offers enough entertainment.
But if you are looking for a sharply written modern romance with deeply developed characters, consistently clever humour and the emotional subtlety of the best contemporary rom-coms, the film may disappoint.
It is more of a comfortable, familiar romantic entertainer than a genre-defining film.
My Verdict on Prem Keetanu
There is a strange irony to Prem Keetanu.
The film is about young people trying to find their place in life, yet the movie itself sometimes seems unsure about exactly what it wants to be.
Is it a college comedy? A romantic triangle? A coming-of-age story? A commentary on modern relationships? A career drama?
It tries to touch all of these areas.
When it concentrates on friendship, awkward romance and youthful comedy, it is genuinely enjoyable. Veer Pahariya and Nikhil Vijay share an easy comic rhythm, Aafiya Sayed brings freshness to the female lead and Aparshakti Khurana keeps the romantic triangle lively.
But when the film tries to make its emotions heavier, the writing becomes less convincing.
The biggest disadvantage is inevitably Premalu. The Malayalam original had a distinctive warmth and natural charm that made its relatively simple story feel fresh. Prem Keetanu has the same basic ingredients but doesn’t always know how to recreate that magic in Hindi.
That said, I wouldn’t call the film a complete failure.
If you haven’t watched Premalu and enjoy youthful Bollywood romantic comedies, Prem Keetanu can still work as a relaxed weekend watch.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐½/5
Story: 3.5/5
Screenplay: 3/5
Direction: 3.5/5
Comedy: 3.5/5
Romance: 3/5
Performances: 3.5/5
Music: 3/5
Entertainment: 3.5/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Final Verdict
Prem Keetanu is a pleasant but uneven romantic comedy that works best when it stops trying too hard and simply lets its young characters be funny, awkward and confused. It doesn’t match the effortless charm of Premalu, but it has enough youthful energy, performances and emotional moments to make it a decent one-time watch.
Watch it if you enjoy college romance, friendship, comedy and coming-of-age stories. If you loved Premalu and expect the same magic, keep your expectations in check.
